Kintsugi 5 - Can I use the microwave or dishwasher?
Updated: Oct 24, 2023
Today we will talk about Kintsugi tableware. Kintsugi is a traditional technique for repairing ceramics and tableware and piecing them together with beautiful gold and silver wire, and has its own charm. However, special care must be taken when using and caring for kintsugi tableware. Here, we will explain in detail how to use and care for Kintsugi tableware.
To conclude first, using the microwave and dishwasher machine is basically a no-no.
1. Use in microwave
Kintsugi tableware should be avoided from being exposed to high-temperature heat sources. We do not recommend using it in the microwave. Kintsugi materials can melt at high temperatures, which can damage the repaired part of the tableware.
Also, sparks from gold or silver can cause discoloration. Instead, use other heat-resistant containers if you need to heat your food. In order to maintain the beauty of Kintsugi for a long time, it is important to handle it gently.
Some people may be able to use the vessel without any problems if it is not decorated with gold or silver, or if it has just been restored with lacquer. But I don't recommend it.
2. Using the dishwasher
It is also wise to avoid washing Kintsugi dishes in the dishwasher. The hot water and strong detergents in the dishwasher can weaken the kintsugi adhesive and damage the dish.
However, Kintsugi can be washed with strong detergent. However, please wipe off the water as soon as possible and avoid leaving it in water for a long time. If you leave it in water for a long time, the lacquer adhesive will peel off. In other words, it is possible to start Kintsugi again.
We recommend hand-washing Kintsugi tableware. When washing by hand, be gentle and use a gentle detergent and a soft sponge. Kintsugi tableware is also a handmade work of art, so treat it with care to enjoy its beauty for a long time.
3. Daily care
There are a few points to keep in mind when using Kintsugi tableware on a daily basis. After using dishes, wash them immediately and wipe them gently. Avoid using hard scrubs or abrasives to protect the kintsugi area. Also, when storing tableware stacked on top of each other, be careful not to let the kintsugi parts touch each other directly.
Kintsugi tableware is a wonderful piece that combines beauty and history. With proper care and attention, use these tableware with care and enjoy their unique charm for a long time. The art of kintsugi is a wonderful tradition of beautifully repairing broken things, and we need our help to preserve its charm. Kintsugi tableware is also an opportunity to transform a meal into a special experience and celebrate the story behind it.
