Kintsugi 8 - How to make and use Sabi-urushi
Sabi-urushi is very important for Kintsugi, just like Kokuso and Mugi-urushi (barley lacquer), and it is no exaggeration to say that it is one of the basic keys. Sabi-urushi is created by mixing Tonoko (abrasive powder) with water and then mixing it with raw lacquer. It is the most fine-grained base, so it is necessary for finishing cracks, chips, cracks, and all other bases.
Material
The materials needed to make Sabi-urushi are as follows. I'll include links to the items I use for your convenience when purchasing.
Materials of Sabi-urushi
You will also need the following tools:
The following explanation is the same as for Mugi lacquer.
A surface plate is a workbench. Anything can be used, for example a clear file can be used as a surface plate.
The hinoki spatula is used for kneading. You can also use plastic instead of cypress, but I personally think wood is easier to use.
Ethanol is used to clean the surface plate and hinoki spatula. Ethanol is also used to wipe off dirt from dishes, so it is one of the tools you should have on hand.
How to make
1. Place the Tonoko powder and water on a surface plate that has been thoroughly cleaned with ethanol.
2. Add water little by little to the Tonoko powder and knead it. Knead until it is as hard as an earlobe.
3. Raw lacquer is added to a mixture of Tonoko powder and water in a ratio of 6:4. Raw lacquer is 4.
4. If you knead it further, it will be completed.
How to use
Sabi-urushi tends to harden, so cover it with plastic wrap and mix it occasionally. For cracks, apply it on top of the barley lacquer, and for chips, apply it on top of Kokuso.
Useful information
Kintsugi requires quite a lot of tools and materials, and I use this when I need to organize them.
